In this edition of our Product Manager Spotlight, we're excited to introduce Luke Franklin, a key player in TrustFlight's mission to revolutionize aviation technology. With a unique background that spans software engineering, project management, and even piloting, Luke brings a multifaceted perspective to his role in shaping the future of digital aviation solutions.
Luke's path to becoming a Product Manager at TrustFlight is as unique as it is inspiring. After completing his GCSEs, Luke took an unconventional route, foregoing traditional higher education to contribute financially to his household. He went straight into an intensive five-month apprenticeship, which kick-started his career as a Software Engineer at Capgemini.
From there, Luke's journey took him through various roles across different industries. He progressed from project management to business analysis, eventually advancing to the role of Lead Business Analyst where he managed a team. This experience in leadership and people management added another valuable dimension to his skill set.
A turning point came when Luke pursued his passion for aviation, earning his Private Pilot Licence (PPL). This experience opened his eyes to the prevalence of paper-based processes in the aviation industry, inspiring him to develop an app to assist with his studies. This realization ultimately led him to TrustFlight, where he could fully embrace the mission of digitizing paper processes within the aviation sector.
At TrustFlight, Luke works on the Tech Log product, a digital solution for the critical Technical Logbook used in aviation. He explains, "The Tech Log records every detail of an aircraft's operational history, including maintenance activities, defects, and flight information. Traditionally, these logs have been paper-based, which can be cumbersome, prone to errors, and challenging to manage."
Luke's current focus involves adapting the Tech Log for the FAA market and onboarding TrustFlight's largest customer to date, CommuteAir. He's also working on enhancing the product to support larger airlines as the commercial airline industry begins to embrace digital Tech Logs.
The transition to digital solutions in aviation comes with its own set of challenges. Luke highlights the complexity of understanding different regulations and adapting the product to meet both existing and new requirements, especially when entering markets like the US.
Despite these challenges, Luke sees tremendous opportunities in the digital transformation of aviation. He envisions a future with fully integrated digital ecosystems that enhance operational efficiency, improve safety, and provide real-time data analytics for more informed decision-making.
Luke's approach to product management is deeply rooted in understanding user needs. "Understanding the pain points of our users is paramount in driving effective problem-solving and innovation," he says. His method involves user-centric design, cross-functional collaboration, and data-driven decision-making.
One of the current challenges Luke and his team face is onboarding their largest customer within a tight timeframe and with evolving requirements. "It's crucial for us to fully understand the customer's needs, while also considering how other customers might utilize similar functionality and the overall value it can bring to our product," Luke explains.
Luke's experience as a pilot gives him a unique edge in his role. It enhances his ability to understand and communicate effectively with other pilots, ensuring that the solutions developed truly address the needs of end-users. Additionally, he leverages TrustFlight's depth of expertise, consulting with experienced pilots and other key stakeholders to ensure comprehensive and well-rounded solutions.
Outside of work, Luke maintains a healthy work-life balance with a variety of interests. He's an avid football fan, supporting his local team, Walsall, as well as the England national team. He also enjoys gaming, camping trips around the UK, and international travel, whether it's for skiing or seeking warmer climates.
These diverse experiences contribute to Luke's well-rounded approach to product management. As he puts it, "I often find that it refreshes the mind, allowing me to come back to work in top form."
As Luke continues to drive innovation at TrustFlight, he remains excited about the future of aviation technology. His unique blend of technical knowledge, industry experience, and personal passion positions him perfectly to lead the charge in transforming the aviation industry through digital solutions.
For those aspiring to enter the field of aviation technology, particularly in product management, Luke's journey serves as an inspiring example of how diverse experiences and a passion for innovation can lead to impactful contributions in this exciting and evolving industry.
