Leadership Spotlight: Peter Bouwer, Head of Customer Success at TrustFlight

A Diverse Background Leading to Aviation

Peter's path to becoming a leader in aviation technology is as unique as it is impressive. With a BSc Degree in Earth Sciences and a Post Graduate Higher Diploma in Education from the University of Port Elizabeth, Peter began his professional life as a qualified Geologist. However, his passion for aviation, kindled in childhood and nurtured during his service in the South African Air Force where he qualified as a Private Pilot, led him to pivot his career towards the skies.

Peter's aviation career took flight when he became a Branch Manager for a General Aviation business engaged in Aircraft Sales, Air Charter, and Aircraft Maintenance. This role marked the beginning of a 27-year journey in Business and General Aviation, culminating in his position as Director of Operations EMEA for a well-known Global FBO chain.

The TrustFlight Chapter

In 2018, while taking a sabbatical and running his own business, Peter was approached by the former Directors of Centrik, now TrustFlight. He saw this as an opportunity to not only return to the aviation industry but also to broaden his experience while leveraging his skills to lead an "amazing team."

As Head of Customer Success at TrustFlight, Peter oversees the Customer Services Department, which encompasses the Training, Implementation, and Support Teams. He describes his role as one of oversight, resource allocation, and collaboration, with the ultimate goal of delivering the best possible customer service.

Driving Digital Transformation in Aviation

Peter views TrustFlight's role as key to delivering digital transformation in the aviation industry. "We have a unique offering with a well-developed product to offer the sector, backed by some good people who stand behind the work that they do," he says. What excites him most is TrustFlight's potential to be a world-class leader in this field.

He highlights two significant initiatives that showcase TrustFlight's innovation:

  1. Centrik 5: A recent launch that brings a fresh look to their product, which has been well-received by customers.
  2. One TrustFlight: An initiative that brings all of TrustFlight's products together in one platform, making it more cohesive and user-friendly for customers.

Peter emphasizes that these kinds of initiatives are what make TrustFlight an industry leader. To support these advancements, he ensures that his teams are well-trained, leveraging the expertise of their Training Team to help customers get the most out of these new offerings.

Leadership Philosophy

Peter's leadership style is deeply rooted in respect, trust, and genuine care for his team. He believes that "a happy, engaged team will always deliver no matter how tough the task at hand is." His approach emphasizes:

  1. Ensuring the team is respected and heard
  2. Fostering happiness and engagement
  3. Communicating effectively
  4. Infusing pride in the work
  5. Leading, not just managing
  6. Building mutual trust

This philosophy is currently being put to the test as Peter's team works to meet the expectations of large, demanding customers within tight timelines. Despite the pressure, Peter's team is rising to the challenge, working beyond normal hours to deliver results.

Balancing Act: Work and Life

Peter strongly believes in the importance of work-life balance. "Without a work-life balance, we would be doomed to failure in my opinion," he states. Outside of his passion for aviation, Peter enjoys boating and motorcycling. He finds that working on his boat after hours and on weekends provides the recharge he needs to maintain his energy and focus at work.

In closing our interview, Peter wanted to share a special message to his team: "I'd like to thank each one of the Team for, in the first instance, the support they give to each other and, secondly, for how they respond to me making my task easier than it would otherwise be. Thanks, Team!"
